| Question | How are two part paints better than one part paints? |
| |
| Answer | Alkyd enamels, and modifications of alkyd enamel technology, have been the workhorse products in the marine industry for approximately fifty years. Generally, they dry reasonably quickly, are easy to apply and have very good weathering characteristics. More alkyd enamels are still used than any other enamel type. Their properties are well known to all experienced yachtsmen. Today the fact that excellent finishes can be obtained from them with a minimum of effort is probably their biggest selling point. The minimum effort consideration is made when alkyds are compared to two-part, aliphatic polyurethanes. Polyurethanes of this type have superior properties relative to high gloss and colour retention, longevity, chemical and abrasion resistance and overall film integrity. They also represent a significant health hazard when sprayed. They require greater attention to detail and preparation when used. However, when properly applied, they are without question the best air dry finishes currently available. |
